The "Organ Club" was organized in 1928, one year
after the opening of the Jefferson Theatre. Each Saturday morning kids were
treated to cartoons, serials and special features including Al Sacker at the
might Morton organ.
This scene is June 2, 1951. Voting is in progress for the talent contest. The
first "short" will be "Rushin' Ballet" with the Little
Rascals. Then Woody Woodpecker and Tweety cartoons followed by a new chapter
of Undersea Kingdom. The feature film will be "The Thing! From Another
World".
Notes from the artist:
To this day "The Thing" remains one of the scariest movies ever made - a real classic and the Jefferson Theatre in the '50s era was somewhat scary and mysterious. The Kiddie show on Saturday started about 9:00 AM and was over just in time to catch the one at the Liberty Theatre which started at 1:00 PM.
My son, Bryan Welborn, started working with me on this nostalgic 50s scene using Organ Club photos sponsored by Coca-Cola. For clothing references we took 17 kids to the Jefferson and placed them around the theatre in various spots - paying them later with pizza. This scene pays tribute to Classic Saturday morning TV of the 50s, such as Howdy Doody and Space Patrol. Look for the "Secret Decoder Ring" and Space Patrol insignia on the boy's shirt.
I still had to get my '41 Cadillac in the picture - look for the emblem.
