By the mid-sixties, the Beatles were all over the charts as
the "British Invasion" was in full swing. The "Times they were
a changing" Mini-skirts, twiggy and bee-hive hair styles were in. Manard
G. Crebbs was being replaced by flower children and hippies in old Volkswagon
busses!
There was a strange mix of juke box hits: "Wild Thing",
"Strangers in the Night", "The Ballad of the Green
Berets", and "Hanky Panky". The Rolling Stones had "Paint
it Black" while the Four Tops sang "Reach Out I'll Be There".
(Both groups are still around!)
This scene looks in on a young graduate trying out her new Mustang with a
friend. They seem to be getting a lot of attention from the guys in the Super
Sport Chevelle.
Perhaps they'll double date to see the latest movie at the South Park Drive-in
Theatre, "The Wild Angels" with Peter Fonda, or just have a great
malt and talk about the new TV show that started last night, a show that took
us where no man (no one) has gone before…
Notes from the artist:
The date I picked for this nostalgic scene was September 9th, 1968. Debuting the night before on NBC was Star Trek. So I added some Trek Trivia. The license plate number on the classic 64 ˝ Mustang is NCC-1701, the insignia for the star ship Enterprise. Spock is paying his bill for a classic Shelton's Diner meal.
Of all the classic cars I've owned my favorite was the '66 Chevelle Malibu. Mine was not the Super Sport in the painting ... I couldn't afford the gas!
While Star Trek was a great space fantasy the real space
adventure was just getting off the ground. The license plate number on
the Cheval, NAA-316 honors that quest. On March 16th that year
Neal Alan Armstrong demonstrated his cool courage and quick thinking when the Gemini
space craft he was testing went out of control. His ability to "save
the day" made him the selection for the first man on the moon on July
20th 1969.
